Broadchurch is a British television series that focuses on crime and was broadcast on ITV in three series from 2013 to 2017. Chris Chibnall created the series and was an executive producer. He also wrote 24 episodes. The series was produced by Kudos and Imaginary Friends Productions Ltd. The series is set in Broadchurch (a fictional English town near Dorset) and features Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (David Tennant), and Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller(Olivia Colman). Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan are also part of the ensemble, as is Charlotte Beaumont, Arthur Darvill (Jonathan Bailey), Vicky McClure and Adam Wilson.
The series' first episode, which aired on March 4, 2013, focused on Daniel Latimer, a local 11-year old, and the effects of grief, suspicion and media attention. The main focus of the series is Danny's family: his mother Beth (Jodie Wiltaker), father Mark (Andrew Buchan), sister Chloe Beaumont (Charlotte Beaumont). The second series, which aired on 5 January 2015, focuses on the dual storylines of Danny's murderer being brought to justice and Hardy being haunted by a past case. The final and third series, which aired on 27 February 2017, focused on the rape at a local party of Julie Hesmondhalgh. While the Latimer family tries to move on from Danny’s death, the Latimer family does everything possible to make it work. Chibnall stated that the third series was his last, and that he originally intended Broadchurch to be a trilogy.
The writing, cinematography, and character development received praise from all three series.
