Deadwood, an American Western television series, aired from March 21, 2004 to August 27, 2006. It spanned three seasons and 36 episodes. The series takes place in Deadwood, South Dakota in the 1870s, both before and after the area was annexed by the Dakota Territory. It charts Deadwood's transformation from a camp to a town. David Milch created and produced the show. The cast includes Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane and Al Swearengen (real-life Deadwood residents), respectively. Other historical figures are also featured as characters in Deadwood, such as Wyatt Earp and E. B. Farnum. These characters are both historical facts and substantial fiction. Milch used real diaries and newspapers of 1870s Deadwood residents to help him create characters and events and design the show's look and feel.
Deadwood was praised for its writing and McShane’s performance. It was also nominated for eight Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe.
