Elementary is an American procedural drama television show that presents a modern update to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character. Robert Doherty created the series and it starred Jonny Lee Miller playing Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu playing Dr. Joan Watson. The series debuted on CBS on September 27, 2012, and was broadcast on the network. The series premiered on CBS on September 27, 2012.
The series follows Holmes, a former consultant to Scotland Yard and recovering drug addict, as he helps the New York City Police Department solve crimes. While he is not a fan of police procedures, he often conflicts with Captain Thomas Gregson (Aidan Quinn), but they remain respectful of each other. Holmes is accompanied initially by Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu), a sober companion. She is a former surgeon who was hired by Sherlock’s father to assist him in his rehabilitation. She eventually becomes Holmes' apprentice and then his professional partner. Holmes is also in conflict with Jamie Moriarty, his former lover and nemesis (Natalie Dormer). Jon Michael Hill plays Detective Marcus Bell, Rhys Ifans plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft Holmes and John Noble is Sherlock's father Morland Holmes.
