Gilligan's Island, an American sitcom, was created by Sherwood Schwartz. The show's cast includes Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr. and Jim Backus. Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise and Russell Johnson are also included. Dawn Wells is one of the stars. From September 26, 1964 to April 17, 1967, it aired on CBS for three seasons. The show follows seven castaways on their adventures to survive on an island that they have been shipwrecked. The episodes focus on the conflicts of the different castaways and their failed attempts to escape from their situation. Gilligan is usually responsible for these failures.
Gilligan's Island aired for 98 episodes. The first season's 36 episodes were shot in black-and-white and later colored for broadcast. The second and third seasons (62 episodes each) as well as the three sequels to television films (aired between 1978-82) were shot in color.
It received strong ratings in its initial run and grew in popularity over the decades of syndication, particularly in the 1970s, 1980s, when many markets aired the show late in the afternoon. Gilligan's title character is a cultural icon in America today.
