Marvel's The Punisher, an American television series that was created by Steve Lightfoot and is available on Netflix, is based on the Marvel Comics Punisher character. It is set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which acknowledges the continuity of the franchise’s films and other television shows. It is a spinoff of Daredevil (2015)-2018, the first Marvel Netflix series. The Punisher was produced in association by Marvel Television and ABC Studios. Lightfoot served as the showrunner.
Jon Bernthal plays Frank Castle/Punisher, a vigilante who uses deadly methods to combat crime. Ben Barnes, Amber Rose Revah and Jason R. Moore star. Deborah Ann Woll is also a part of the cast. Ebon Moss–Bachrach, Daniel Webber and Paul Schulze join them in the first season. Josh Stewart, Floriana Lima and Giorgia Wihigham will join the second. In 2011, Fox offered a pilot commitment for a television series about the Punisher. However, that was cancelled. Bernthal was chosen to play the role of Daredevil in the second season. The spin-off was in development since January 2016. Netflix ordered the series in April 2016, when Lightfoot and Bernthal were confirmed. The series explores the grief and violence of the title character and was shot in New York City.
The first season was available in its entirety on Netflix beginning November 17, 2017. The second season followed on January 18, 2019. Although they received mixed reviews, they were nominated for Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award nominations. The Punisher was cancelled by Netflix on February 18, 2019. After Disney had regained their license, all Marvel Netflix series were taken off Netflix on March 1, 2022. They were available to stream on Disney+ starting March 16.
