Reign is a television series about historical romance created by Laurie McCarthy for The CW. The series is set in the late-sixteenth Century and focuses on Mary, Queen of Scots' rise to power at the French court. Along with an ensemble cast, Adelaide Kane stars as Queen Mary Stuart. The series debuted on The CW on October 17, 2013 and ended after four seasons.
Warner Bros. Television, CBS Television Studios and Joyful Girl Productions produced the series, along with Take 5 Productions, Joyful Girl Productions and Whizbang Films in Toronto. The CW ordered a pilot in February 2013 for a TV series loosely based upon Mary Stuart's life. The show focuses more on fictional storylines than historical accuracy. Kane was also cast that month. Filming took place mainly between Toronto and Republic of Ireland.
The series received mixed reviews upon its initial debut. Television critics praised the acting and costume design but were critical of its historical accuracy.
