The Mandalorian, an American space Western TV series created for Disney+ by Jon Favreau, is available on the streaming service Disney+. It's the first series of live action in the Star Wars universe, and it premiered five years after Return of the Jedi (1983). Pedro Pascal plays the title role, a bounty hunter on the run who is hired to rescue "The Child".
Star Wars creator George Lucas had started developing a Star Wars live-action television series in 2009 but it was too costly to produce. In October 2012, he sold Lucasfilm to Disney. The work began on the new Star Wars series for Disney+. Favreau joined Disney+ in March 2018 as showrunner and writer. Along with Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni he executive produces. The series' title was revealed in October 2018. Filming began at Manhattan Beach Studios, California. The StageCraft technology was developed by Industrial Light & Magic, a visual effects company. It uses virtual sets and a 360 degree video wall to create series environments. It has been used by many other television and film productions.
On November 12, 2019, Disney+ launched The Mandalorian, which was also the premiere of The Mandalorian. The first eight-episode season received positive reviews and was nominated at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series. It also won seven Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. To positive reviews, a second season premiered October 30, 2020. A third season is expected to air in the latter half of 2022. Many spin-off series, such as Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett, will be expanding on the series' timeline.
